14, 2012 is an incredibly memorable day for a few reasons. It was the
day I was giving a nutrition seminar at a DRM event to raise money for
the rescue. Prior to the event I received a call from the president,
Mary Ruud, asking if I could take a pup to foster as we are short on
available foster homes. Of course I said yes! All the while I was
selfishly hoping an older red boy was coming to my house in turn a
black, severely overweight female is what really came to me (photos attached). In foster, you never know what you are going to get and that can be a beautiful opportunity.
Princess
Mya (now Mya the Great), then 4 ½ year old female had a family who
loved her so much they felt it best to surrender her. Unlike many we
see, she was not abused, underfed or disobedient. Mya actually is a very
well mannered, pleasant girl who had “happy feet” as we call them that
the family just was unable to keep confined appropriately. Truly, Mya
was very obese for her stature; she’s a petite, small boned beautiful
girl. This was my challenge- getting her fit and trim while attempting
not to fall in love with her gentle, old soul and kind heart. It wasn’t
long (like a day, okay maybe hours or minutes) before Mya creeped her
way into my heart. At the time I had a 13 year old Doberman Tess who was
struggling to walk or stand so bringing in a younger pup was a
potential risk. Turns out, Mya sensed this and was incredibly cautious
and gentle around Tess. Even though Tess was a fairly welcoming
dobergal, surprisingly, Tess was very overly accepting of Mya upon
arrival and genuinely seemed to enjoy her company from the start. Less
than 2 weeks went by and we had to say our goodbyes to Tess. That very
day Tess left us I realized I would commit to adopting Mya as she was
the friend Tess needed in her last days and the friend I would need
after.
Mya
is on a very nutritious whole food diet and exercise regimen to aid in
getting her strong, fit and to a healthy weight. She is such a gem of a
dobergirl with a whole lot to say! From helping “school” many younger
pups on how to play, enjoying her time with other older doberfriends,
going to the lake- she’s a swimmer and would stay in the water for hours
if allowed, or going to the barn, Mya the Great seems to be able to do
it all! Her shining personality won me over from the beginning and has
been a great addition to my family.
Thank you Doberman Rescue Minnesota for bringing Mya into my life-
