Lucy here! Well I graduated from school tonight! I think I was the top of the class. I get a week off, and then I start my post secondary classes. Can’t wait!!!!!!

We are so excited for you Lucy!! When you adopt from DRM we do require that you take your new dog to formal obedience classes, with a group of other dogs and a trainer. WHY you ask? It is not the same to “train your dog yourself” as classes, such as these, offer so much more that maybe you never thought about. Dobermans need socialization with other dogs and people, they need to learn how to act with others and this is something you and your dog are getting in a formal class. There is a trainer to help should problems arise, hopefully a skilled trainer! If you ever feel uncomfortable in a class, don’t stay, there are many wonderful trainers out there in classes that will welcome you and your pet!  The trainers should be watching for behaviors that are not appropriate in your dog, and they should be willing to offer advice to help you change those behaviors. As owners, we need be open to advice, given from trainers, so we can help our dogs become good canine citizens. Training should be a life long commitment for all pet owners, be it obedience, rally, agility, therapy, freestyle dance, fly-ball, tracking, scent work, to name a few activities that require disciplined skills in a group setting, as should socialization of your new friend!
